Jabalpur Tourism

abalpur is tourism city of Madhya Pradesh. It was previously known as Jubbulpore during the British Raj. The name of the city Jabalpur is basically derived from an Arabic word Jabal which means Mountain. Another belief is that a mythological figure known as Sage Jabali Pattanam, who had the distinction of learning of Vedas despite of geing from the lower caste, apparently lived in the area during the Ramayana era. Ashokan relics have been found. Later on it was the capital of the famous Tripuri kingdom (9th–10th centuries). In 13th century, it is seized by Gond dynasty till 1781. From 1818 it was undertaken by Britishers.

Under the British Raj, Jabalpur became the capital of the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, which was part of the British North-Western Province. At that time it became infamous for the Thuggee murderers, but made more famous by the man who suppressed thugee, Col. William Henry Sleeman, who was also appointed commissioner at Jabalpur.

Jabalpur is one of the most important city of Madhya Pradesh, Central India. From Tourism point of view, Jabalpur City is considered best to launch Central India Wildlife Tours of Madhya Pradesh. In order to reach Jabalpur city, one can have direct train connectivity with all major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata etc. Airport in Jabalpur is Dumna Airport at a distance of 20 kms from city center. One can have direct flight connectivity with Delhi. National Highway connecting Varanasi to Kanyakumari passes through Jabalpur city. It is well connected with Nagpur, Bhopal city. Their is regular bus service operating between Nagpur and Jabalpur. It is an important Military cantonment since 1904 (British India) with Vehicle Factory, Gun Carriage Factory, Ordnance Factory, Signals Training Centre. Places to visit here are Bhedaghat, Museum (Monday closed), Madan-Mahal fort, Bargi-dam boating etc
