Amarkantak

Amarkantak TourismAmarkantak is a holy place for Hindus. It is located in Satpura mountains that falls in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh State, in Central India. Amarkantak is situated at a height of 3500 ft. Through out the year hindu devotees and tourists from all over the world visits Amarkantak. Apart from Pachmarhi, it is also considered as a hill station of Central India. Two important rivers - Narmada and Sone originates from Amarkantak. It is also known by the name of "Teerathraj" which means "King of all pilgrimages". Amarkantak have unique natural diversity. Many rare plants of high medicinal value are found in forested area of Amarkantak.

How to Reach Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh :

Reaching Amarkantak is easily possible through train and ground transfer. In order to reach Amarkantak through train, we are required to reach Pendra Road railway station, which is about 45 km away from main site. For transfer from Pendra road to Amarkantak, either public transport bus or taxi is required. Bilaspur is also another city close to Amarkantak and linked through railway network with all major cities of India.

Amarkantak can be travelled easily by ground transfer from Jabalpur city. Distance from Jabalpur to Amarkantak is 250 kms and can be covered in between 5-6 hrs. It is at the East direction of Jabalpur city. Regular car rental service is available in Jabalpur for Amarkantak tour.

Nearest Airports to Amarkantak are Jabalpur Dumna Airport (250 kms) and Raipur(245 kms) Airport having direct flights for Delhi.

Amarkantak is visited by thousand of devotees and tourists. For accommodation in Amarkantak, one can stay in Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Department Corporation (MPSTDC) hotel called Holiday Homes. Holiday Homes in Amarkantak is the only well furnished hotels for visitors. It is a budget category hotel and centrally located in Amarkantak. In addition to it, certain ashrams are also their to stay.

After Magh dynasty, Bhar-Shiva-Nag dynasty rulled this area. In 5th century Sengar Dynasty rulled this area followed by Kalchuris. The rule of Haihay Kalchuris can be called the golden period of this area. Kalchuris arrival in Baghelkhand was in 9th century. 


Places of Tourist Attraction in Amarkantak

Amarkantak got number of places with unique bio-diversity, religious importance and scenic beauty. Just like Pachmarhi, Amarkantak have lot of un-discovered tourist destinations. Still some important places to visit in Amarkantak are:

  • Narmadakund : It is a open pool at the origin of river Narmada with collection of hindu temples like Shiva Temple, Goraknath Temple, Kartikey Temple, Durga Temple etc.
  • Mai ki Bagiya : It is considered as a goddess garden. It is a dense forest at a distance of 1 km from Narmadakund. It is a natural garden of fruits & flowerslike mango, banana, rose etc.
  • Kapildhara : It is a waterfall, situated at a distance of 7 km from Narmadakund. Waterfall is about 100 ft. high. It is said that Kapil muni lived here in past.
  • Sonemuda : It is the origin point of Sone river. Sonemuda is about 2 km away from Narmadakund. River Sone get its name derived from Gold pronounced as "sona" in hindi language. Here sone river cascades from 100 ft. waterfall. Scenic beauty of the location is awesome.
  • Kabir Chabutra : It is a holy place for Sant Kabir panth sect. It is believed that Kabir attainted spiritual power at this place in past. Sant Kabir spent many years here in meditation to attain new heights of spiritual power.
  • Evening Aarti : Evening Aarti at temples in Amarkantak is another attraction for visitors and devotees.
